Kyiv Tango Orchestra
Timeless
The influence of Eastern European folk music on early tangos is undeniable, and the quartet makes this abundantly clear in three Ukrainian folk songs. Even without vocals or an understanding of the original tragic lyrics about pain and farewell, one is captivated by these magnificent arrangements.
The melodies effortlessly carry dancing feet, and the artists pass the phrases back and forth so skillfully that you realize this music was absorbed with their mother’s milk. Three additional pieces penned by Eastern European composers such as Mykola Leontovych and Bogdan Reshetilov are also a delight and showcase impeccable craftsmanship. Two-thirds of the tracks are going into my favorite playlist—and hopefully into others as well!
