Romeo y Juliet

At first glance, Shakespeare and the tango may not seem to have much in common. But if you think about the passion and drama of a stage play like Romeo and Juliet, you can immediately imagine that such a play can also be set to tango.
This is exactly what the Argentine bandoneonist, guitarist and composer Joaquín Alem, who lives in Oldenburg, has realized in a quintet setting in a profound and multi-layered way.
Alem conceived Romeo Y Julieta as music for a ballet, the first part of which is included on this CD as an eight-part suite. His dense music also works without choreography and is always far from a romanticizing realization of the story. The way the ensemble breathes melancholy together is magnificent and already points to the tragic end. In general, the interplay of the New Tango Group is the secret star of this CD. Compact, soulful, rich in nuances. (Review in Tangodanza 93 - 1.2023).

The musicians are:
Agnes Izdebska-Goraj, Violin
Akiko Kapeller, Piano
Petia Rousseva, Viola
Jochen Zillesen, Double Bass
Joaquín Alem, Bandoneon und Composition
