Diego Schissi Cuarteto
Timba
In the fourteen tracks on this album, Diego Schissi unfolds a fascinating world of sound in which tango, jazz, and contemporary music merge into a poetic whole.
In Timba, Schissi pushes the boundaries of tango nuevo toward chamber music and jazz. His compositions are precisely constructed, but not sterile; the five musicians revel in their freedom and joy of playing. Sometimes rhythmically edgy, sometimes lyrical and thoughtful, sometimes full of unexpected breaks.
The sounds of the quintet—piano, bandoneon, violin, cello, and double bass—tell stories of misfortune and passion, of intoxication, fear, and hope. Chance is only the surface; beneath it lies a clear compositional will. For Timba, the Diego Schissi Quinteto received the 2017 Premio Gardel in the category 'Orquesta de Tango Instrumental'.
