Carel Kraayenhof Quartet
100 Years Piazzolla
In the Netherlands, bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof is the undisputed leader of the tango scene, so it's no surprise that he too is making his contribution to last year's 100th anniversary of Astor Piazzolla's birth.
The album is a live recording from various venues, made during the first stage program of Kraayenhof's new quartet formation in 2021.
With it, the four players trace the maestro's life from a clever listening angle that Piazzolla himself once described as a "battle between devils and angels." Throughout the entire dramaturgy, which lasts more than an hour, one senses the Dutchman's close bond with the Argentine, for whom he worked for months in New York in 1987. One of the finest Piazzolla anniversary releases, honoring the master with deep knowledge and sensitivity.
